March 30, 2011

The grudge match.

Hell, it’ll be fun to watch.

And plays into the narrative.

I am not sure he should be so thrilled. Iggy isn’t a Conservative commercial. Harper has a very low boiling point and could go off at any moment if driven off script.

      YES!!!

I want to seek Harper blow his nut entirely. If he does and still wins through good policy and strong presentation, well, doesn’t he deserve the majority. Bold move.

I am also not sure Harper wants the opposition vote to coalesce around Iggy. Giving him equal status this way might just do that. Anyway, Harper is a legend in his own mind, so I am sure he will be fine.

I think you’d see something similar to what happened in Vaughan.

But yes, it might be better to try to win on a vote-split…

In any event, I’d enjoy the spectacle of a head-to-head debate.

Given the over representation of the Conservative Vote in Alberta, it is your only hope. If the opposition vote coalesces around Iggy, both the NDP and the Conservatives are done.

Harper knows that it is majority or bust, and that he has more chance of picking up votes from the Liberals than from any other party. I think a format like this, where there is no pack of yapping dogs, will play to Harper’s strengths. In any event, it’s the fair way to do it – bring it on!

Greg — Everyone said that about Ford/Smitherman. I look at the 49% that says Harper is best to lead country, and I say go all out to get them to move to vote blue.

Head-to-head is best way. And if Harper can’t do well in that debate, well, Ignatieff deserves it. Best way to go.

Ben, you might be right, but Iggy has been so pilloried by the commercials that if he doesn’t wet himself in public, people will consider it a triumph. I think the downside for Harper is much greater than for Iggy. In my experience it is better to have the audience split many, many ways over who won — especially with our Goddamn FPTP system.

Ever notice how Harper’s election strategy has reverted back to that of Paul Martin? This, in addition to the longtime Tory tradition of depending on the Liberal Party to be governed by a moron, is going to erode their lead. Ignatieff can at least speak English and won’t shoot important video addresses to the nation on a cell phone camera.
