That’s my crowd!

March 26, 2010

Although I’m at one with the PM’s political instincts — Pat Burns Arena beats a “thinker’s conference” any day of the week — I was struck by Don Martin’s closing slam against the Liberal conference:

Still, I’d bet 90 per cent of those in this audience think a double-double is four shots of single malt Scotch and not a Tim Hortons coffee order. And that disconnect makes dreaming up big ideas for the average voters a huge challenge.

You know what?  Tim’s is nice, but I’d go with the four shots of single malt any day of the week.

    So would Don Martin.

As for the Pat Burns arena. That’s the problem with the government’s stimulus plan. It was a multi-billion dollar slush fund, used to build arenas in every small town in Canada . I seem the Liberals being run out of town for much less.

You know what? There is no frigging way that 90% don’t know what a double double is. Maybe 10 to 30% max as it is in the parlance now. It’s as if the Grits have become somehow the naive and sheltered princess in a fairy tale. This myth that centrist and leftists are not Canadian is a bit of a joke and yet another something that keeps the New Government of Canada fluttering at a beefy third of national popularity.

You know, there’s some interesting geography about the double-double. I first encountered Tim Hortons at college in Ontario, where of course everyone knew what it was. When I moved back to Winnipeg, Tim Hortons was making a big push to expand. But no one knew what a double double was. If you ordered one, you’d be asked to clarify! My little sister worked at a Tim’s for some months before she knew what it was. Of course now it has worked its way into common use, but for a while there I confused a lot of Tim’s employees.

Alan — I was siding with the scotch-drinkers.

Greg — I didn’t like the stimulus package either. I preferred the 2008 economic update. But then, you may remember, the parliamentary crisis hit…

MichaelB — I’ve still never actually had one. (I hate coffee.) As I said, I’m a single malt man… Though I do love the maple cream doughnuts…

Now they’re talking about pension insurance, at 9:45 AM –
